Endovenous Therapy: VNUS Closure / Laser
Endovenous thermal ablation is a treatment alternative to vein stripping. Endovenous Radiofrequency Closure was approved by the FDA in late 1999 early 2000 and endovenous laser treatments were approved about 18 months later. Closure uses radiofrequency energy (heat) to close the targeted refluxing veins, the underlying source of spider veins and bulging varicose veins. Dr. Harper was the first physician to perform Endovenous Radiofrequency Closure in Georgia in early 2000 and has personally performed almost 4,000 cases.
Laser therapy is a minimally invasive option for the treatment of refluxing truncal veins. The Endovenous Laser Ablation (ELA) uses targeted laser energy to close the treated segment of the vein. However, Endovenous Laser does not treat spider veins, lower leg varicose veins or bulging varicose veins.
Your Consultation
To determine if you're a candidate for an endovenous thermal ablation procedure schedule a consultation with Dr. Harper. He will evaluate your varicose veins and determine which treatment option is best for you. During the appointment, he will also answer any questions you have and make sure you are comfortable with our recommendations. You should allow 90-120 minutes to complete the consultation.
Your recommended procedure will be scheduled for a later visit allowing time for insurance approval. Dr. Harper's staff will provide you with detailed pre- and post-procedure instructions.
Your Treatment
An endovenous treatment is an office procedure done under local anesthesia and ultrasound quidance. If desired a mild oral sedative may be given. The radiofrequency or laser fiber is inserted though a small needle into your diseased vein. The device is then activated delivering heat to the vein collapsing and shrinking the vein allowing it to close.
Post Treatment
After your endovenous procedure, you might have bruising and soreness for a few days. You can usually treat these symptoms with over-the-counter pain medications. You are encouraged to resume normal activities immediately after treatment. You can improve your results by avoiding strenuous physical activity, hot baths, and exposure to sun. You will wear light compression hose for a short period after treatment to achieve optimal results.
Dr. Harper's staff will review the post treatment guidelines with you before and after your procedure.
