Varicose veins are unsightly, swollen and visibly blue veins that appear  . While many people are more concerned about the cosmetic challenge found with this condition, other varicose vein sufferers experience health consequences that warrant prompt medical attention.  It is even possible to have symptomatic vein disease while having no visible varicose or spider veins.

To what extent can varicose veins affect blood pressure  and cardiovascular health remains somewhat of a medical mystery. However, doctors do know that it contributes to blood pressure conditions like venous hypertension  and other illnesses that could put a person’s life at risk.  Orthostatic hypotension, a drop in blood pressure when going from a supine to standing position may be partially attributable to pooling of blood in varicose leg veins.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

A number of different factors and health conditions cause varicose veins to develop. Some of the primary contributors include pregnancy, standing for long periods of time, inactivity, obesity and genetics.

Additionally, women are at a greater risk of developing varicose veins than men because of hormonal differences and the effects of pregnancy. However, men are not immune to the development of varicose veins.  Anyone can get varicose veins and should discuss their concerns with a physician right away.

What Are The Symptoms And Health Risks Associated With Varicose Veins? How Is Blood Pressure Affected?

People who suffer from this condition may experience any number of symptoms. Common symptoms of venous disease include: heaviness, aching, swelling, pain, itching, throbbing, burning in your legs, night cramps and restless legs.

However, if you suffer from cardiovascular disease, in particular heart failure you could develop high blood pressure and venous hypertension . As the blood pools in your veins, your heart must work harder. You could be at risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. You also could develop blood clots that could travel to your heart, lungs or brain.

How Are Varicose Veins Treated?

There are surgical and non-surgical solutions to varicose veins; which treatment you receive depends upon your needs and the advice of your board-certified phlebologist.  Treatment options include:

  • Treatments for Spider Veins:
    • Sclerotherapy for spider veins
    • Laser vein treatment
  • Ablation Treatments:
    • Using a catheter (Venefit) (EVLT): weld the vein shut
    • Special glue (Venseal): seal the vein
    • Chemical ablation (Varithena): occlude the vein
  • Microphlebectomy, a minimally invasive procedure to remove bulging varicose veins
  • “Healthy Veins for Life” principles including:
    • elevating your legs daily,
    • wearing compression hose,
    • weight management,
    • exercise and
    • reserving high heels for only very special occasions.
