1 in 3 women is embarrassed by spider veins, which present as tiny red, blue, or purple surface veins. They’re most commonly found on the legs, but can be seen on the face or breasts. If you are one of these women, it is nice to know that there is help. Vein Specialists of the South is a leader in Georgia in the diagnosis and treatment of varicose veins, spider veins, and leg swelling. At VSS, we provide Comprehensive Vein Care®, meeting your individual needs delivered with WOW service.
Spider veins, also called telangiectasia, form three pattern types: webs radiating from a central point, formations that resemble tree branches, and thin, linear patterns that form almost geometric lines. No matter the pattern they are unsightly, sometimes painful and progress without treatment.
Genetics is the number one contributing factor to developing spider veins. They are more common as you age and your veins weaken. Being sedentary, standing and sitting jobs and carrying extra weight puts added pressure on the venous system, and lack of movement discourages proper blood flow.
At Vein Specialists of the South, we offer Comprehensive Vein Care® and promise to offer the right procedure, for the right patient, at the right time. Fulfilling that promise, we offer two procedures for the treatment for spider veins. Cosmetic sclerotherapy is the worldwide gold standard for spider vein treatment. By targeting the problematic vessels and their feeder vessels, we inject a sclerosing solution which causes the vessels to collapse and disappear over time. The body absorbs these non-functioning vessels and reroutes blood supply to healthier vein networks deeper beneath the skin.
For certain types of spider veins, primarily facial spider veins or more difficult-to-treat veins, cutaneous laser therapy may be a treatment option. The laser uses monochromatic or pure color light to target veins based on color, primarily red and blue vessels. This laser light energy effectively penetrates the skin without damaging it and attacks the spider vein. The spider vein integrity is damaged while preserving the surrounding cells. The spider vein collapses and it is reabsorbed by the body. While most spider veins are better treated by sclerotherapy, having another option for resistant spider veins is ideal.
It’s just 3 easy steps…
Typical spider vein treatments involve 2-4 sclerotherapy or 3-6 laser therapy sessions, with visible improvement after the second session. Upon completion of your treatment regimen, you may see up to 70%-80% reduction in visible spider veins, with periodic maintenance sessions to address future spider veins that form.
While sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure, you’re relatively free to resume your normal routine with the addition of wearing compression stockings for 1-3 weeks post-treatment. Laser therapy also has little downtime, though there is a chance of side effects like swelling or redness slowing you down socially.
