Our Better Veins for Life® Patient Protocol

Are you discouraged by the way your legs look and feel because of varicose veins, spider veins or leg swelling?  We can help.  At Vein Specialists of the South, our goal is for you to enjoy Better Veins for Life®. That is why, after evaluating and treating thousands of patients like you, our founder and medical director Dr. Kenneth Harper developed the Better Veins for Life® protocol.

What is the Better Veins for Life® Patient Protocol?

    • Step 1: The Evaluation
    • Step 2: Comprehensive Treatment Plan – Conservative Care, Education, and Lifestyle Changes
    • Step 3: Minimally Invasive Walk-In, Walk-Out® procedures

Our vision at Vein Specialists of the South is to add value to your life by providing the best vein care, designed to meet your individual needs, delivered with WOW service.

Our protocol starts with a personalized vein evaluation, followed by a comprehensive treatment plan and minimally invasive Walk-In, Walk Out® procedures if needed.

Step 1: The Evaluation

evaluating veins using ultrasound

We want to hear your story so we can learn how to best help you. Your health history is important in creating a plan to meet your goals. Your story includes how your concerns affect your sense of well-being, quality of life, ability to perform normal daily activities, your present and past medical problems and treatments, medications, vitamin and supplement use, and more.

Our VSS patient care team tailors your physical examination and diagnostic testing to address your specific concerns. Following the VSS Better Veins for Life® protocol, your vein care team creates a comprehensive plan to meet your wants and needs. Our goal is to treat the underlying causes of your venous disease, not just the symptoms.

During your evaluation, we listen to your concerns and screen you for visible and underlying venous disease to get the full picture of your healthcare needs. If no treatment is needed, we will let you know that as well.

Here’s what we are looking for:

  • Visible signs of venous disease, such as bulging varicose veins, spider veins, swelling, and skin changes
  • Symptoms of underlying vein disease, including leg heaviness, aching, swelling, inflammation, leg cramps, and restless legs
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Superficial Venous Thromboembolism (SVT), more commonly known as blood clots
  • Family history of venous disease and blood clots
  • Risk factors for venous disease such as medications, lifestyle, underlying health conditions, prior pregnancies, and more

Step 2: Conservative Care, Education, and Lifestyle Changes

Following your evaluation, we recommend a series of conservative care lifestyle changes that you can implement into your daily routine. You can learn more about these steps by clicking the links below.

  1. Compression
  2. Leg elevation
  3. Healthy weight management
  4. Exercise
  5. Healthy footwear

Your journey begins by partnering with us in your care. We believe in a minimally invasive approach to your vein care and avoid unnecessary procedures.  Focusing on your concerns and our findings, we deliver on our promise to provide the “right care for the right patient at the right time”.

Step 3: Minimally Invasive, Walk-In, Walk-Out® Procedures

minimally invasive procedures to give you better veins for life

The days of vein stripping are gone thanks to minimally invasive vein procedures. At Vein Specialists of the South, we offer only the best in vein care – including new and emerging treatments with proven safety and results.

Our Walk-In, Walk-Out® procedures feature:

  1. Treatments in our accredited vein care facility, avoiding the hospital setting
  2. A pleasant and relaxing environment, with a focus on keeping you comfortable and informed during the procedure
  3. Gentle local anesthesia, avoiding the risks of general anesthesia. If needed, we offer mild oral sedation or nitrous oxide sedation
  4. Use of micro-incisions (2mm) to treat your varicose veins
  5. Application of a compression wrap following the procedure – for use with your compression socks as you heal
  6. Minimal post-treatment discomfort, normally requiring only acetaminophen to relieve
  7. Little to no recovery downtime in most patients

This approach to your vein care offers improved safety and lower cost compared to more invasive surgical approaches.
