Sclerotherapy Spider Veins

Do Spider Veins Cause You To Feel Insecure And Steal Your Confidence?

Do you have unsightly spider veins that make you want to hide your legs? Spider veins affect 1 in every 3 women and are one of the top concerns of women.  You don’t have to be self-conscious. We can help you regain the confidence to wear your favorite dress, shorts or swimsuit again.

The most common cause of spider veins is genetics, pregnancy, and standing or sitting careers. Spider veins are clusters of red, blue or purple veins near the skin surface. Despite being < 1mm, they have a big impact on your life. At Vein Specialists of the South, we evaluate and treat spider veins with sclerotherapy.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work for Spider Veins?

Sclerotherapy is the go-to treatment for spider veins the world over, and advances in medications and injection technology have only improved over time, with lower risks, minimized discomfort, and better results.

To close spider veins, a  microneedle is used to inject a sclerosing solution directly into the spider vein or feeder vein leading to the spider vein clusters.  The solution flushes the blood out of the vein allowing direct contact of the solution with the vein wall. The sclerosant denatures the vein wall and over time, the body absorbs the spider veins and they gradually fade away. Typically 2-4 treatments are required for optimal results.

Any underlying vein disease should be treated before beginning cosmetic sclerotherapy.  If there is no underlying vein disease, you can expect 70-80% fading of your spider veins upon completion of the treatment protocol.

Am I A Good Candidate For Sclerotherapy?

Spider veins are a cosmetic problem. A consultation at VSS can determine if sclerotherapy is the best option for treating your spider veins. During your assessment, we determine if there is hidden vein disease. At that point, we can determine if you are a good candidate for cosmetic sclerotherapy or if another treatment may be best for you.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

Cosmetic sclerotherapy treatment sessions last between 30-60 minutes. Depending on the number and size of your spider veins, 2-4 sessions are usually recommended.

What Results Will I See?

Sclerotherapy vein injections expectations are for a 70%-80% reduction of spider veins’ visibility and intensity upon completion of a series of treatments.  It is important to realize that your spider veins may be more noticeable after the first treatment and begin to fade with subsequent treatments.

Is There Any Downtime?

Sclerotherapy is a Walk in. Walk out … with little to no downtime® treatment. You may return to your normal schedule immediately. Avoid strenuous activity, hot baths, sun exposure and wear compression for 10-14 days for the best results.

Patients choose VSS for their Cosmetic Sclerotherapy because of our expertise in providing the best vein care delivered with WOW service. Terri Harper, MSN, FNP-C, clinical instructor for our Comprehensive Vein Training Center ®, has educated physicians across the nation on cosmetic sclerotherapy. She has trained the VSS staff in the safest and most effective spider vein treatment techniques.

A few reminders:

  • You may notice bruising and itching at the injection sites that resolve quickly.
  • Your spider veins may look worse before they look better.
  • Rarely, tenderness at the injection site may occur with cosmetic sclerotherapy.

Risks of Sclerotherapy include:

  • Trapped blood – when a portion of the vein remains open between two sealed sections. Easily treated with needle evacuation of the trapped blood during the next visit.
  • Pigmentation changes may occur over the treated vein.
    • Most often resolves over time.
      • Rarely pigmentation may last longer.
    • Please inform our staff prior to treatment if you:
      • Take certain medications (bring a list) or have medical conditions
      • Take iron supplements
      • Have a history of scarring or pigmentation
  • Matting – a pinkish-red ‘bruise’ near the treatment area made of multiple fine red or purple veins.
    • May gradually fade for up to a year
    • Evaluate for underlying vein disease and correct if matting occurs
    • Laser therapy for persistent matting may help
  • Micro Skin Ulcer – a rare skin breakdown/ulcer (2-3mm) may occur
    • Though tender, it heals with local skincare
    • And minimal to no scarring
