Are you uncomfortable with the way your legs look and/or feel? Are your legs aching and tired at the end of a long day? Are your legs restless or cramping at night? Maybe you don’t own a pair of shorts or have not enjoyed the beach or lake in years.
If so, you are not alone. Over 25 million Americans suffer from vein disease. Although women can be predisposed to develop vein disease, men can also be at risk based on occupation, heredity, weight management, and age. The good news is that Vein Specialists of the South is here to help.
Many career jobs require constant standing, sitting, or putting pressure on their legs all day, every day. Whether you spend the majority of your day sitting or standing, you are at risk. At VSS, we have treated patients with extreme cases of varicose veins that are unsightly, and in some cases painful, due to day-in and day-out leg pressure while at work. And age doesn’t always play a factor – being hard on your legs every day for years has effects.
If you’re like most, seeing the doctor isn’t at the top of your priorities. Whether you’re a fitness buff or you’ve “let yourself go” a bit, you likely struggle to remember the last time you were in a doctor’s office. This is especially true if you don’t have any health concerns or symptoms that worry you. The problem is, signs and symptoms of vein disease can be subtle, but can turn into more serious complications if not addressed early.
Do you have any of the following symptoms at the end of the day?
Any one or more of these can unknowingly be associated with underlying vein disease. Varicose veins have also been associated with chronic heart and circulatory disorders, as well as recent studies showing an increased risk for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE). Many serious health problems show no signs or symptoms at all until it’s too late.
It’s always important to see your doctor, even for something you may consider to be a minor issue, like varicose veins, spider veins, and leg swelling. VSS sees patients which are not in pain but simply want unsightly varicose veins removed. But we look for any underlying vein disease at the same time.
A little prevention goes a long way in lowering health risks leading to chronic vein disease such as, potentially fewer health care costs, less missed days of work, improved overall health, and increased comfort and productivity while at work.
You might just THINK your feet or legs hurt after working that 12-hour shift, but it is a FACT. How does that happen? When standing, gravity pulls the blood downwards to the lower part of the body. As blood is pumped through the body, the valves within the veins prevent the blood from flowing backward. After a while, however, these valves can become weak and eventually fail. When this happens, blood is no longer prevented from flowing backward and instead pools in the extremities. Gravity will pull the blood back into the legs, ankles, and feet. This forces the veins to expand or “balloon” to accommodate this extra blood.
Chronic Venous Insufficiency, sometimes called Venous Reflux, is a marker of venous disease. The reflux may start mild, but with time can progress to a waterfall of blood falling the wrong direction. As blood pools in the leg, the elastic walls of the veins are stretched, leading to progressive damage to the venous system. When the veins are large enough to be seen or felt, they are known as varicose veins. This can happen at ANY age. Pooling of venous blood increases the risk of blood clots, leg swelling, and pain.
Varicose veins have also been associated with chronic heart and circulatory disorders, as well as recent studies showing an increased risk for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE).
While there are other factors which can lead to venous disease, research has shown that long periods of standing or sitting are major players. More than 80 million Americans suffer from varicose veins, spider veins, leg swelling, venous ulcers, and related conditions. Unfortunately, vein problems are chronic and progressive, and without treatment they get worse. This can affect your quality of life, well-being, and most importantly, your productivity and long-term morale or job fulfillment while at work.
Let us ease your mind about these worries. Thanks to advances in healthcare, we offer minimally invasive treatments with little to no pain. Prolonged upright postures tend to disrupt the circulation of the lower leg and reduce the effectiveness of the venous-muscle pump mechanisms. Medical grade compression socks apply pressure to your lower extremities, which encourages venous return, limits leg swelling, and helps prevent varicose veins. Studies have shown that wearing compression socks also makes a difference in your level of fatigue from standing all day. With the growing awareness of compression socks and their health benefits, modern styles and colors have emerged that make the garment as stylish as any socks you would find in a high-end department store. While everyone will benefit from conservative therapy, you should still have a proper diagnostic vein screening and evaluation to determine if there is any underlying vein disease.
Training and education are important components of avoiding complications from prolonged standing or sitting in the work environment. Getting a ‘leg up’ by creating a healthy workforce is a good place to start and Vein Specialists of the South (VSS) is here to help with the educational process.
If you believe your co-workers could benefit from having their legs evaluated, and your company is dedicated to its wellness benefits and/or program, please have your Human Resources Manager or other member of management contact us. We will gladly meet with them to set up an employee vein wellness consultation and screening event, to explain vein disease, prevention, and recommend the best treatment based on individual findings and needs. We are always here to help.
